Only in the world of MotoArt could an old fuel tank cradle from a KC-97 Stratotanker aircraft be transformed into a piece of custom furniture that is absolutely stunning. These cradles served as supports for the jet fuel tanks in a plane that resembled a B-29 bomber, but now are the foundation of an incredibly distinct and modern creation that is like nothing in the marketplace, or for that matter, the planet!
The KC-97 Fuel Tank Cradle Desk is a robust design supported by arched legs that reflect the lines and the character of the fuel cradle’s lines. It is shaped in an attractive and traditional "L"– main desk and return, although the return is optional. The custom desk is topped with a 1/2" tempered glass surface supported by a stylish 1" square aluminum bar that is arched and polished to a mirror finish, subtlety complementing and accenting the overall design. As a unit, the KC-97 Fuel Tank Cradle Desk fuses historic, traditional and contemporary sensibilities.
Options include a perforated aluminum privacy screen in anodized and powder-coated color finishes. Standard size is 92" long with a 69" return, but can be customized to other dimensions.
History
Taking to the skies in 1950, the Boeing KC-97 Stratotanker served the United States as a strategic tanker aircraft. Large aircrafts require large drinks of fuel and the KC-97 Stratotanker was the in-flight bartender.
If the KC-97 looks familiar, it may be due to the fact that it was a variant of the C-97 Stratofreighter but redesigned as an aerial refueling tanker. Boeing overhauled the C-97 and transformed it into the KC-97 by adding the necessary fuel storage tanks, plumbing, boom arm required to make it a strategic tanker. Split into two decks, the KC-97's upper deck was designed to carry oversized cargo while the lower deck contained tanks which held the transferrable jet fuel.
